The Downside of Evergreen Requisitions

For years companies have been using evergreen requisitions to create a continuous stream of applications. While this approach may appear efficient for employers, it presents a range of challenges for both job seekers and organizations, particularly in terms of compliance and brand reputation.

This is not to say that evergreen requisitions don’t have their place. They can be very useful for high-volume roles. It is a great way to provide an ongoing pipeline of candidates without continuously having to repost. I think the biggest issue with evergreen requisitions is when companies try using them to build a future pipeline. The company is not currently hiring and rather than forecasting their future demand they create false hope in the job market that they are actively looking for talent.

There are many other reasons that companies should be mindful of their evergreen requisition usages. These include:

False Recruitment Data: Evergreen requisitions can distort recruitment data by inflating metrics such as time-to-fill and applicant volume, as they remain open indefinitely and do not accurately reflect actual hiring activity.

Brand Reputation at Risk: Evergreen requisition can generate false hope and leaves candidates feeling like they wasted their time applying. It can also lead to distrust if a candidate sees a job has been posted for several months.

Frustration for Recruiters: Evergreen requisitions can frustrate recruiters, as they must sift through countless outdated applications, often from candidates who are no longer interested when it’s time to actively recruit.

So, what should companies do?

Maintain Transparency: Clearly state if a job is an evergreen requisition, explaining that it’s open for continuous hiring so applicants understand it may not reflect an immediate vacancy.

Engage with Applicants: This is crucial to maintaining interest and ensuring a positive candidate experience for future hiring needs.

Regular Updates: Refresh job postings regularly to keep them current and appealing to potential candidates.

Evergreen requisitions can be beneficial, but they require careful management. By focusing on transparency, engagement, and regular updates, employers can mitigate risks and ensure a positive experience for both the organization and potential employees.
